Yılancatı Canyon (officially Geyikbeli Canyon Nature Park) is located 55 km from Düzce city center and 37 km from Yığılca district, within the borders of Karakaş and Hoca villages. Since it is on the route to Yedigöller National Park, it can be easily added to the itinerary of those heading that way.
Along the canyon, there is a dense forest cover consisting of fir, beech, black pine, and oak trees. Small ponds and waterfalls occasionally break up the canyon, and clear flowing waters and viewpoints are prominent features of the region. There are also resting points within the area.
Nature walks, photo safaris, day picnics, angling, canyon climbing, and bicycle tours can be done in the area. The pristine nature of the region is due to the fact that most visitors are hikers seeking silence and natural surroundings.
Guide's Note
When to Visit
The canyon can be visited all four seasons, but its most vibrant state is seen in late spring and early summer. After the snow melts, the ponds and waterfalls flow more abundantly. In autumn, the changing colors of the forest provide an additional advantage for photography. Since road conditions can be difficult in winter months, plan your vehicle situation in advance if you intend to go then.
How to Get There
From Düzce city center to Yığılca district is approximately 37 km, and from there, the canyon is reached via Karakaş Village. The total distance from the city center is around 55 km. Going with your own car is the most practical option; public transport is not frequent in this region. If you are going to Yedigöller National Park, you can easily add it to your route as it is on the same itinerary.
Route Suggestion
Combining the canyon with a visit to Yedigöller makes sense, as both are on the same route. You can start in the morning, spend a few hours in the canyon, and then continue to Yedigöller in the afternoon. If visiting alone, a day can easily be filled with a day picnic and a medium-length hiking trail.
How Much Time to Allocate
2-3 hours are sufficient for a short walk and photo break. Those who want to explore different viewpoints of the canyon and do some angling or climbing can allocate half a day. For those with camping equipment, the area, along with nearby Yedigöller, is also suitable for a one-day program.
Things to Pay Attention To
Since the area is quite natural and maintenance is limited, walk carefully on rocky terrains and near waterfalls. Phone signal can be weak, so it's useful to note down the route in advance or download a map. Dirt roads can become slippery on rainy days.
Photography Spots
The edges of the ponds within the canyon and the rocky points where the waterfalls cascade are the most preferred shots. In the morning, the light in the forest filters through the fir and beech trees and reflects on the water. Those who want to take photos at these hours prefer to go early.
About the Region
Yılancatı is referred to as both 'Geyikbeli Canyon' and 'Yılancatı Canyon' in local sources. This part of Yığılca district is also known for its caves, waterfalls, and beekeeping tradition. During a canyon visit, there is also an opportunity for those who want to buy local honey from the surrounding villages.
